⚓ Marine Navigation & Communication – Level 3 Course Overview

This program prepares students to operate safely and effectively in the maritime environment by developing foundational skills in coastal navigation, onboard communication systems, maritime rules, and the use of modern navigational instruments. It is ideal for learners pursuing careers in inland and offshore marine operations, deck handling, and vessel operations.

Key learning outcomes:

-   Understand the principles of coastal and open-sea navigation, including: Bearings, latitude/longitude, nautical miles, and chart plotting.

 -   Read and interpret nautical charts, tide tables, and compass headings
 -  
Operate traditional and electronic navigational tools: Magnetic and gyrocompass, GPS, radar, echo sounder, and Automatic Identification System (AIS)
 -  Understand International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs)
 -  Communicate effectively using VHF/UHF marine radios, distress signals, and maritime phonetics
 -  Apply the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
 -  Practice voyage planning, route plotting, and log keeping
 -  Follow marine safety protocols and emergency response procedures

Hands-On Projects May Include: • Project 1: Use of marine charts and plotting tools to simulate a short coastal voyage • Project 2: Practice real-time communication using marine VHF radios in simulated ship scenarios • Project 3: Radar target plotting and interpretation for collision avoidance • Project 4: Emergency simulation: coordinating a man-overboard response using radio, compass, and GPS
