Skill Development and Technology Hub (Skill Hub), a forward-looking Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution poised to reshape the technical and professional workforce in Nigeria and Africa at large. As an educator with over two decades of practical industrial experience and many years in academia, I have served within and outside Nigeria's system. I have taught at various colleges in the UK, focusing on further/higher TVET and apprenticeship education, providing practical education that caters to the industry's needs. My tenure spans roles as a lecturer in electrical and electronics engineering, IC&A, curriculum developer, industrial training instructor and contractor, a researcher, and an advocate for competency-based education. This multifaceted exposure has given me unique insight into the widening disconnect between Nigeria’s educational institutions and its industrial realities.
Unfortunately, many young Nigerians now view higher education as a “scam”, and the reasons are not unfounded:
• Theoretical overload with minimal practical training
• Outdated infrastructure and curriculum
• Lengthy academic disruptions due to strikes
• High graduate unemployment and underemployment
• Weak links between academia and industry
Having witnessed these systemic deficiencies firsthand, I have resolved to channel my expertise into the revitalisation of vocational and apprenticeship education—a pillar I believe is crucial to unlocking Nigeria’s industrial potential.
Through Skill Hub, we are building a platform that delivers:
• Hands-on, industry-aligned training in over 20 trades, including Machining, Electrical Power Transmission, IT, Healthcare, Agriculture, and Renewable Energy.
• Dual pathways for employment and entrepreneurship, with partnerships that lead to internships, placements, and microenterprise support.
• Smart infrastructure, including solar-powered workshops, simulation labs, and digital classrooms to ensure relevance in a modern industrial economy.
This journey is deeply personal to me. I was trained as an engineer but called as a reformer. I believe that Africa’s future lies not just in degrees but in deeds—in empowering a new generation of skilled, productive, and self-reliant citizens.
